Winter Solstice

Winter solstice

This is not a strict script but instead an outline to help create a ritual that is yours. The ritual is in your body – the point of a ritual is to connect and listen. So, as long as you achieved that you have participated in a Winter Solstice Ritual. Congrats! If you would like to share your experiences, please do! My email is madi@madisonnees.com

Winter Solstice Ritual

Winter Solstice Ritual:

Make an ancestor altar (commonly we would put plants, flowers, candles and if you have photos). I have a small space on a table for this. When building an altar, think about things that have meaning to you and bring you to the sacred space of ritual within yourself.

Honor the Indigenous peoples of your land. If you are in San Diego you are on unceded Kumeyaay territory. A quick google search should help you if you are located elsewhere.

Call on the spirits of the land. The rock beings, the shrubs, animals, rivers, lakes…. Bring them into your awareness. Maybe there are specific places in nature that arise in your mind. Let them.

Traditionally there is an exchange of energy in any ritual. What I mean by this is that it is traditional to make an offering. Perhaps it is singing, a dance, looking up a song from your lineage and playing it or making a food and drink offering. Follow your inner guidance.

I often bow here because it is traditional in Japanese culture to bow out of reverence.

Notice your body. Notice the sounds. Deepen and slow your breath. Relax the pelvic and jaw muscles. Spend some time in silence if that is available to you.

Perhaps you move a bit. Following inner guidance to move how it feels good. Breathe.

Taking a moment to reflect. What has nurtured you throughout the year? What things have you nurtured? What aspects of life would like to learn to nurture more? In reflecting on this we honor our maternal ancestral lineage.

Since the solstice is welcoming back the light or sun, most people light some kind of fire. This may be a fire pit or candle but it is not necessary.

When you are complete with your reflection. Thank the land you are on and all beings that showed up to support your work today and close your ceremony in a way that feels good to you.

***Return to this space as often as you like. ***
